This release contains standard raw (EDR), calibrated (RDR), and 
derived products (ABR & BTR) of the 2001 Mars Odyssey Thermal 
Emission Imaging System (THEMIS).  

In addition to the new EDRs collected during orbits 1300-2399, all 
EDRs originally released in October 2002 have been re-released with
updates to the headers; see the ERRATA.TXT and the individual QUBE 
header HISTORY objects for more information.  Improved processing 
of the spacecraft datastream has also allowed for the recovery 
of a few more EDRs from the 816-1299 orbit range.  

This is the first release of THEMIS calibrated data products (RDR).
All available infrared and visible RDRs collected during orbits 
816-2399 have been released at this time.  Please note that the 
THEMIS team is in the process of converting the current floating 
point format of the core data in products to a more compact short
format;  this change is expected to be available with the April 2003
standard data delivery and all RDR products will be re-released at
that time.

With this delivery, the ABR and BTR are now accepted as THEMIS
standard data products and are described in the THEMIS standard 
data documentation.  In addition to the new ABRs and BTRs derived
from data collected during orbits 1300-2399, all brightness 
products originally released in October 2002 have be re-released 
with updates to the headers.  Also, a processing error in some BTRs 
was corrected in these re-released images.  For more information

and other timing keywords.  The revision to the VIS-EDR products
updates the header to include the IMAGE_DURATION keywords and 
corrects the stop time values, where necessary.  A new visible 
radiometric calibration algorithm (version 2.0) was used to 
regenerate the VIS-RDR products; the previously described keyword
revision was incorporated into the new calibration routine.  
VIS-ABR products were regenerated from the new source VIS-RDR 
products, including the timing keyword upgrades, and browse 
products are now available in PNG format, rather than JPG format.

derived products (ABR & BTR) of the 2001 Mars Odyssey Thermal 
Emission Imaging System (THEMIS).  

In addition to the new IR and VIS data products collected during
orbits 4600-5799, some of the IR-RDR and all VIS-RDR, VIS-ABR, and 
IR-BTR products have been re-released.  New VIS-RDR qubes were 
generated using newly modified calibration files in the existing 
visible radiometric calibration algorithm.

The revisions to the IR-RDR, IR-BTR, and VIS-ABR products are due
to improved handling of data drop-outs in the geometric parameter 
files (collectively known as the SPICE files) provided to the THEMIS 
team by the Odyssey spacecraft team.  Previously, missing data in the
CK (pointing) kernel file forced the THEMIS team to use predictive 
geometry parameters in the IR-RDR processing (see section 2.2.10 of 
CALIB/PROCESS.PDF), and to fill the geometric parameter keywords in
the IR-BTR and VIS-ABR headers with "NULL" values.  The Odyssey 
spacecraft team is now providing the THEMIS team with alternative CK
kernels which can replace most of the incomplete files in the THEMIS 
processing algorithms.  The alternative CK files assume that the THEMIS
camera is pointing nadir.  The revision to the IR-RDR products is that
 all qubes processed using the alternative CK files now contain the 
keyword value STRAYLIGHT_GEOMETRY = "Nadir pointing assumed".  The 
revision to the IR-BTR and VIS-ABR products is a header update to 
include the keyword GEOMETRY_SOURCE_DESC and to fill in all geometry 
parameter keyword values.  Also, visible browse images previously 
projected with predictive geometry will now be projected with nadir 
pointing assumed.

Some VIS browse images have also been updated.  The missing CK kernel 
data forced the THEMIS team to use predictive geometry parameters to 
generate some of the VIS browse images;  these have now been replaced 
with geometrically projected browse images.  Images at high latitudes 
(i.e. latitude greater than 60 degrees) are now projected using a polar 
stereographic projection, rather than the sinusoidal projection used 
for the lower latitudes.

derived products (ABR & BTR) of the 2001 Mars Odyssey Thermal 
Emission Imaging System (THEMIS).  

For this release, all VIS browse images have been re-generated with a
slightly different stretch applied before reducing the image to 8 bits 
per pixel for storage as a PNG.  The new stretch avoids saturation in
the darkest and brightest regions, while slightly suppressing the details 
in the median gray regions.  As always, the full resolution data is 
available in the other standard data products.

SFDU2CUBE version 1.60 algorithm.  For the purposes of the THEMIS

In addition to the new IR and VIS data products collected during 
orbits 10200-11299, many data products have been re-released.  The
extensive list of REVISION_IDs can be grouped into the following four
related categories:

  - IR and VIS EDR products with ERRATA_IDs similar to ODTIE-0001-1.3
    and ODTIVE-0001-1.3 were generated with modified SFDU2CUBE software
    v1.63 which clarifies ambiguous descriptions in the qube header;
    no change was made to the EDR data.

  - all IR RDR with ERRATA_IDs similar to ODTIR-0002-1.6 were reprocessed
    with CAL_IR_IMAGE v4.8 which includes the improved STRAYLIGHT algorithm;
    header modifications to the source IR EDRs were propagated to the 
    IR RDRs, as well.

  - all IR BTR products with ERRATA_IDs similar to ODTIB-0001-1.8 were 
    regenerated to propagate the modifications of the source IR RDRs to 
    this higher level data product.

  - VIS RDR and ABR products with ERRATA_IDs similar to ODTVR-0002-1.6
    and ODTVB-0001-1.8 were generated to propagate the header description
    changes of the source VIS-EDR to the higher level data products; 
    no change was made to the VIS-RDR or VIS-ABR data.

During the exensive reprocessing efforts of the above errata, 143 previously
unreleased images were recovered from the raw SFDU data packets; these EDRs 
have ERRATA_IDs similar to ODTIE-0007-1.2 and ODTVE-0006-1.2.  All higher 
level data products have been generated as appropriate and are available 
at this time.

This release contains standard raw (EDR), calibrated (RDR), and 
derived products (ABR & BTR) of the 2001 Mars Odyssey Thermal 
Emission Imaging System (THEMIS).  

This is the first public release of the 2001 Mars Odyssey Thermal
Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) Geometrically Registered (GEO)
special data products.  At this time, VIS-GEO products for RELEASE_ID
0001 through 0008 and the current release (0014) are available;  IR-GEO
products will be made available as soon as possible.  All data and 
documentation can be found in the GEOMETRY directory.

In addition to the new data products all VIS-RDR and VIS-ABR have been 
re-released.  The new VIS-RDR qubes were generated using the CAL_VIS_IMAGE 
version 4.10.  For more information about this calibration version, see 
CALIB/PROCESS_VIS.PDF.

during geometric projection (see ERRATA ODTVG-0017-1.1):

All VIS-GEO labels for orbits 16800-24599 have been re-released to 
remove a duplicate keyword found in the history object.  Since there
is no impact on the data (VIS-GEO CUB's) the image products have not 
been changed.

All IR-BTR images for orbits 21200-25699 have been re-released with 
a signal drift correction (UDDW) applied before the radiance to 
temperature translation; earlier orbits will be re-released soon.  
Users who desire IR-BTR products without the correction, should 
generate their own at http://thmproc.mars.asu.edu.

The CALIB/PROCESS_IR document has been updated with a complete 
description of the current IR-RDR calibration algorithm (v5.1).
